Downwind leg during race 3 on day 1 of the 2010 McNulty cup, USA 601 leading though nudged out buy USA 718.

Ashley Henderson
The McNulty Cup, a classic trophy that rivals the Stanley Cup complete with names of Olympic Medalists along with the many winners dating back several decades, was contested in Milwaukee on June 19th and 20th. Twelve very competitive teams competed for the right to drink Mount Gay Rum and Tonic first from the massive chalice. (We will leave the hoisting of the Cup overhead and kissing it to Johnathan Toews and the Blackhawks) such are the rituals of sailing in Milwaukee bay. May they live on with our growing Soling fleet!

After struggling to get marks set and the RC boat anchored, three races were completed in heavy air on Saturday. Scott Conger, Mark Roeder, Dan Haile of USA 718 took a decisive lead after three posting a 1-3-1, followed by USA 824 (David Crysdale, Tieg Gielow, Willy Roseanski), USA 818 (Ross Adams, Scott Hallman, Sam Eady) and USA 601 (Scott Eisenhart, Steve Anderson and Ashley Henderson) in a three-way tie for second.

Sunday produced much lighter winds but the RC deftly managed to fit two races in between shifting and dying breezes. The fleet was adrift but not without entertainment between races. The Eisenhart crew in USA 601, feeling they had something to celebrate, danced shamelessly (we're talking Soul Train here) on the foredeck to the astonishment and amusement of the entire fleet. Clearly, they had not read the seriousness intoned into the Sailing Instructions and opted to have fun with the regatta. That is easy to do when you are kicking butt on a bunch of old guys.

Charlie Camps, John Bailey, and Pieter Vanden Kieboom in USA 824 found some magic in the 2nd final downwind leg of race 4 to pass the entire fleet after a snafu at the start left him DFL after the first upwind leg. He finished first in that race that secured 3rd place in the regatta (2-5-3-1-4). Esienhart solidified 2nd place in the regatta by winning race 5 in USA 601 (2-4-2-4-1) and Conger held back the competition in USA 718 to win the regatta (1-3-1-3-2).
