CAN 230 finishing during race 1 at the 2010 North Americans @ Ashley Henderson
Bath, Ontario welcomed 16 boats to Loyalist Cove Marine! There is a great turn out from the Canadians, though only 1 boat from Milwaukee and 1 from Chicago. We arrived on Canada Day, July 1st, with parades, cookouts, and fireworks, a great way to begin a fantastic event. The Canadians, as always, are putting on a spectacular event with a catered BBQ after racing.
Day 1 of racing began with a light and shifty start. I was on race committee much to my enjoyment, though disappointment that my towing vehicle dropped out last minute, where we were focused on the duration of the shifts and consistency of the directions. The racing began on time 11:00 est with the boats taking a sleepy start as they were all about 2 boat lengths behind the line. After the first up wind rounding the lead became established by CAN 230 (Hans Fogh, Roger Cheer, Gordie Devries) followed by CAN 225 (Peter Hall, Phillip Kerrigan, Ross Findlater), CAN 227 (Tom Mitchell, Franisco Perez, Konrad Davy), and USA 839 (Stuart Walker, Doug Loup, Bruce Empey). as the race continued to the downwind the right gate was favoured though all but a few including USA 834 (Paul McGuan, Michael Garrett, Matt Peters) came to the right gate making the wise decision as the air was polluted at the left gate. They continued to the right side of the course following CAN 230. USA 834 was able to consolidate on some of the boats and CAN 230 widened their lead to solidify the top 4 places for race 1.
Race 2 began after a brief break for lunch and an hopes for wind to fill in with the advantage of the shifts. This was a better race, as the breeze filled in and steadied to 10 -14 knots making ideal soling sailing with flat water. Can 230 nudged out USA 839 at the last minutes for 2 bullets!
I have a new found appreciation for race committed and highly recommend that everyone spend a race or two being apart of a race.
